Thousands cry at funerals

The funerals of the 12 Turkish soldiers, who were killed in an ambush by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party in the southeastern Anatolian province of Hakkari near the Iraqi border Sunday, are held with thousands attending to protest the attack .

Tens of thousands of Turks in 11 different cities around the country took to the streets yesterday at the funerals of slain soldiers.
An attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) that killed 12 Turkish soldiers Sunday was harshly condemned by those who attended the funerals across Turkey and who took to the streets waving Turkish flags and chanting anti-PKK slogans.
Apart from his family members, high-ranking army members and thousands of people attended Samet Saraç's funeral in Bursa, located 230 kilometers south of Istanbul. Saraç's story was one of the saddest that affected people. His mother and father divorced 15 years ago and Saraç could only meet his mother last year because of the problems between his parents.
While Saraç's coffin was carried through the main street of the city, people from the buildings threw flowers on to the coffin and chanted slogans against the PKK. Saraç's mother, Filiz Turan was hardly able to stand on her feet during the funeral. “I cannot explain thepain. I feel. But I promised my son. I will not cry,” she said.
